Part 26 of 33 in the Series Our Friendship by Fadimafayau

Since that fateful day for which Zainaba helped Hajiya Kaka, her visits to Kaka’s house became a cherished routine. Every morning and afternoon, on her way to and from school, she would make a point to stop by and spend time with Kaka. The frequency of their interactions brought Zainaba and Usman closer, their friendship growing stronger with each passing day. Zainaba’s warmth and simplicity made it effortless for Usman to consider her a true friend. Through her, a beautiful connection between their families blossomed, leading to occasional visits and shared moments of joy.

Zainaba couldn’t help but notice that Usman’s faith and behavior had taken a negative turn, his careless attitude towards religion bothering her. Determined to help him rediscover his true self, she embarked on a mission to guide him towards a better path. Unaware of the pact Usman had made with his grandmother, Zainaba sought permission from Umma to visit Hajiya Kaka’s house every Thursday, a day of respite from Islamiyys school activities. Umma, always supportive of Zainaba’s endeavors, readily agreed.

With her kind persuasion, Zainaba convinced Usman to join her in studying Islamic books and reciting the Qur’an every Thursday. What started as a brief 15-minute session gradually evolved into a dedicated three-hour practice. Zainaba observed a peculiar aspect of Usman’s behavior that often perplexed her. Many of his actions seemed out of character, as if he were unaware of his own actions, and he would be genuinely remorseful for any misdeeds. Little did Zainaba know that this was the influence of a mischievous Jinn.

Through the power of Qur’anic recitation and Zainaba’s sincere prayers, Usman underwent a remarkable transformation, shedding his negative traits and emerging as a compassionate and righteous individual. Hajiya Kaka and Bashir, Usman’s father, were overjoyed witnessing his newfound positive change. Kaka firmly believed that Zainaba was truly a blessing for their family.

Usman and Bashir’s relationship flourished, growing even stronger than before. Usman had matured, and his father cherished the moments when they could engage in deep conversations, even if only for a few minutes. This realization fulfilled Bashir’s long-held dream of sharing adult discussions with his son. Usman’s stepmother, however, sought the help of a sorcerer, only to discover that there was nothing that could be done to hinder Usman’s transformation.

Unbeknownst to them, amidst their beautiful friendship, love quietly took root in their hearts. Their care and concern for each other deepened, fostering an affection that went beyond mere friendship.

On a serene evening, Zainaba and Sa’ada were washing Umma’s clothes together when Zainaba paused, removing her hand from the bucket. She gazed at Sa’ada with a sense of urgency, her voice filled with emotion as she pleaded, “Sa’ada, how many times must I implore you to come with me to Kaka’s house? I want to introduce you to the love of my life.”

Sa’ada smiled warmly in response, assuring Zainaba, “Alright, Madam Love. We’ll go today.”

Zainaba’s face lit up with delight, her heart finally at ease. She shared, “You have no idea how often Usman questions the existence of my dear friend Sa’ada. He believes I’m merely fabricating stories about you.”

The two continued washing clothes in silence for a while before Zainaba suddenly remembered Sa’ada’s unrequited crush. “Oh, Sa’ada, I just recalled the guy you used to have a crush on. I hope he’s doing well,” Zainaba said, attempting to comfort her friend.

Sa’ada sighed, her heart stirring with curiosity. “I wonder… It’s been so long since I last saw him.”

Zainaba reassured her, “Don’t worry. Maybe he’s been away. I’m sure he’ll be back soon.”

With determination, Sa’ada and Zainaba made their way to Kaka’s home. After exchanging greetings with Kaka, Zainaba eagerly inquired about Usman’s whereabouts.

“He’s in his room. You can go and call him,” Kaka replied with a warm smile.

As Sa’ada’s heart fluttered and her stomach twisted with nervous anticipation, she saw Usman approach the living room with Zainaba by his side. Her mind raced with disbelief—how could the man she had once adored from afar now be standing beside her best friend? They were in love with the same person. Confusion overwhelmed her, and tears threatened to spill.

Struggling to maintain her composure, Sa’ada rose to her feet and said, “Zainaba, I think it’s time for us to leave.” Leaving seemed like the best course of action, as she knew that if she stayed any longer, her emotions would overwhelm her.

On their way home, Zainaba excitedly shared stories about Usman’s love and care to Sa’ada, unaware of the turmoil brewing within her friend. Unable to contain her anguish any longer, Sa’ada burst out, “Can you please be quiet?” Zainaba looked at her with concern, sensing that something was amiss.

Sa’ada shook her head and replied curtly, “It’s nothing. Could you please inform Umma that Auntie called and I’m going to her place?” Her words were directed at Abu, who wore a worried expression.

Zainaba nodded and assured her, “Of course, I’ll let her know. Don’t you want me to accompany you?”

“No, it’s alright,” Sa’ada responded brusquely before swiftly walking away, leaving Abu standing there with a sense of unease.

Zainaba stood rooted to the spot, her thoughts consumed by Sa’ada’s sudden change in demeanor. They had spent the entire day together, yet Abu had been oblivious to the moment when Auntie had supposedly called. However, she had no choice but to return home alone.

Sa’ada decided to seek solace at her father’s house for the day. Although she knew it would be difficult, it felt preferable to the burning ache in her heart whenever she was near Zainaba

Once inside, Sa’ada retreated to the bathroom, her tears flowing freely. She struggled to comprehend why her life had taken such a painful turn. Zainaba seemed to have it all—everything Sa’ada had ever wanted. Her stepmother, as always, assigned her a list of chores to complete before leaving.

Determined to move forward, Sa’ada resolved to return to her normal routine. Despite her increasing love for Usman, she chose to step aside and let Zainaba claim him as her own. She constantly reminded herself that he was never meant to be hers.

Sa’ada’s shattered life and broken family had drawn Usman’s empathy and care towards her. He felt deep sympathy, witnessing how her parents had abandoned her. The pain of parents neglecting their children after a separation struck a chord within him. Though he wished his own parents were together, he remained grateful for the love and care they still provided him.

Usman’s unwavering support and compassion only fueled Sa’ada’s growing affection for him. She convinced herself that he reciprocated her feelings, yet she found the strength to release him from her heart.

It’s when Zainaba reached SS3, that Usman gathered the courage to propose to her Overwhelmed with joy, she accepted without hesitation, cherishing the dream of a lifetime spent together.

After her O level completion, there wedding transpired.

Their marriage was a testament to their love and care for one another. They shared a life filled with romance and affection. As they embraced, Zainaba whispered lovingly in Usman’s ear, “Aren’t you leaving? You’ll be late.

“He pulled away slightly, gazing into her eyes. “You have no idea how happy I feel every time we hold each other like this. I love it. Your scent and your warmth rejuvenate my heart,” he confessed.

Zainaba clung to him tightly, resting her head against his shoulder. “Do you enjoy it as much as I do?” she inquired. He nodded, his voice filled with sincerity. “I wish we could stay like this together forever.”

Reluctantly, they released each other, and Zainaba made her way to the kitchen, knowing that Usman had already taken care of everything. Since the early days of their marriage, he had taken it upon himself to handle household chores, insisting that he wanted to support his wife and provide her with much-needed rest.

Some mornings, Zainaba would wake early to avoid him, but Usman would follow her into the kitchen. They would cook side by side, sharing laughter and the joy of creating a meal together. Other times, he would take charge and make her sit while he prepared a delicious feast, urging her to relax and enjoy.

Their love blossomed within the warmth of their shared moments, and their companionship grew stronger with each passing day.
